read & download è eBook or Kindle ePUB Û Uwe Tellkamp review Der Turm Geschichte aus einem versunkenen Land Ð eBook or Kindle ePUB In derelict Dresden a cultivated middle class family does all it can to cope amid the Communist downfall This striking tapestry of the East German experience is told through the tangled lives of a s. uite a challange but very worth wile Reminds me a little of Peter Nadas book The book of remembering not sure if that is the english title as I read it in NorwegianDescribes the lives of a family in Dresden during the last years before the wall falls Through little details and small glimpses joined with sometimes brutally abrupt descriptions the mandness and oppressing control of the east german communist system is depicted As God is in the details thats also where you will find his oppositesThe book had some of the most beautiful and imaginative descriptions I have yet to read Favourite uotes freely translated He pointed at the copper beech which was breathing like a nicotine lung the beer tasted fresh and was as cold as an old key The bushes looked like rain drenched cats soaked in honey he remembered the redness of the apple on the plate with its crocked shallow oval shade that licked over the porcelaine like a toungue in the angora light of the november morningThis is hopeless It sounds much better in Norwegian but none the less This book is really worth a read allthough it can be tough getting into as the language takes some getting used to

Wow Wow The Tower is THE novel you need to read to get under the skin of the late and now defunct German Democratic Republic The story is centered around a Dresden based family in the 1980s and sees the reader through the decadence of a moribund system its schools its hospitals its housing system its toxic industry its transport system its military its intelligence services the Stasi its cultural life writers publishing houses theaters Its language and style is rich deep and highly entertaining It has echoes of Musil s Man without ualities of Thomas Mann s Buddenbrocks including of these epics subtle humour You better read it in German if you don t want to miss out on the richness of the language including hilarious passages written in local Saxonian dialect though it s a tough long read best suited for a long and uiet summer break

read & download è eBook or Kindle ePUB Û Uwe Tellkamp review Der Turm Geschichte aus einem versunkenen Land Ð eBook or Kindle ePUB Oldier surgeon nurse and publisher With evocative detail Uwe Tellkamp masterfully reveals the myriad perspectives of the time as people battled for individuality retreated to nostalgia chose to conf. I chose this because life in the GDR is a fascinating topic and this book really did reward meIts characters reminded me of those in Grossman s Life and Fate all were complex struggling with uneasy moral choices under the regime none heroes It was also reminiscent of LF in its epic scale allowing us into middle class life but also that of the state s institutions eg army hospitalWhat I hadn t been prepared for was its experiments with style The writing is beautifuloften with striking metaphors and similes as the book develops there are chapters written as stream of consciousness others solely as dialoguesoverheard conversations with multiple speakers sometimes found tricky to follow The structure of the latter part of the book reminded me at times of Dos Passos USA with its inter chapters and inclusion of contemporary historical materialThere is no real resolution which ends in autumn 1989with the lead up to the destruction of the Berlin Wall the futures of the characters remain uncertain many pieces of the puzzle remain unexplained eg why did Meno and Hannah separate I enjoy indeed prefer that kind of narrative
